Voters of the Seneca Nation of New York elected Maurice John as their president on Tuesday. John, 66, won with 66 percent of the vote, according to a press release from the Seneca Party. He defeated Darlene Miller, who wanted to be the first woman to serve in the president's post. “We have made significant progress the past two years working to ensure the total welfare, health, and wellbeing of all members of our great Seneca Nation," John said in the press release. "We have much hard work in front of us to retain control over our Nation’s destiny.” John served as president in 2006, treasurer in 2004 and was most recently chief of staff for outgoing president Barry E. Snyder Sr. He will be serving a two-year term as president. The tribal constitution prohibits consecutive terms for president but it does not bar former office holders from running again.
