The proverbial check is in the mail -- the federal government is sending $554 million to the Navajo Nation for a trust fund settlement.

The settlement is largest payout to a single tribe. It resolves a trust mismanagement lawsuit that was filed against the Interior Department in 2006.

“This money is going to be of tremendous benefit to the Navajo Nation,” attorney Andrew Sandler of BuckleySandler told The Legal Times. “We are pleased by each and every step forward in the process of getting this money to the Navajo Nation.”

President Ben Shelly accepted the settlement on behalf of the tribe at a ceremony in September. The tribe has been holding a series of public meetings to determine what to do with the money.
