Taos Pueblo man sentenced to 27 months for assault with stick

A man from Taos Pueblo in New Mexico was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for assaulting another tribal member with a walking stick.

Phillip Martinez Jr., 59, used a 43 1/2-inch cedar walking stick to assault the man, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. The victim was left with a fractured left wrist, a left frontal scalp hematoma and a displaced fracture to his nasal bridge as a result of the April 2013 incident, The Taos News reported.

Martinez pleaded guilty to a charge of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He will serve 27 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
