President of Navajo Nation remains in office amid election delay

President Ben Shelly didn't survive his re-election campaign but he remains in charge of the Navajo Nation anyway.

Tribal members were supposed to choose a new president last November but the election was postponed due to challenges affecting one of the candidates. The new vote isn't set to take place until this fall so it looks like Shelly will be staying in office for now.

But some members of the Navajo Nation Council are suggesting that one of their own serve as interim president, Indian Country Today reported. Officially, Shelly is supposed to step down on January 13.
