ANTELOPE –– Despite the freezing rain and wintery conditions, the Sinte Gleska University 45th Annual Founders’ Day Wacipi in Antelope brought friends and families together for another successful pow wow.

The event began on Friday, Jan. 30 with registration followed by the crowning of the new Miss Sinte Gleska University Tara Lynn Guerue (Sicangu Lakota). She is finishing up pre-requisites at SGU and preparing to transfer into a 4-year program for nursing.

The announcers for the pow wow were Everette “Butch” Felix and Pat Bad Hand Sr. who kept the crowd entertained and informed with current events on campus and in Indian Country. They also kept the good energy going with the latest Indian jokes.

In traditional manner, each session of the pow wow began with prayer and honoring of Native American men and women who have impacted our communities. The smudging of the arena floor and guests brought good hearts and fellowship amongst travelers from many states.

Grand entries were held at their usual times with a special grand entry for Veterans and Royalty on Saturday at 12:30. Les Makes Room led the way followed by royalty from area pow wows; including three princesses from the Wambli Ska Drum & Dance Society of Rapid City.

The Multipurpose building on the SGU campus was filled to capacity as families enjoyed the warmth of the exciting competition dancing and singing.

Coordinator, Tina Martinez, was a great host and her dedication to the wacipi was evident in the smiling children’s faces as they danced proudly.
