A police officer in Saskatchewan who kicked a homeless man to the ground has been reinstated after a court overturned his assault conviction.

Officer Rob Power can be seen on a newly-released video confronting Eddie Stonechild in front of a detoxification center in downtown Regina in May 2012. The footage shows him kicking Stonechild, who hit his head on a concrete wall and had to be taken to a hospital for treatment.

Power was fired from the force and he was convicted of aggravated assault causing bodily harm. However, a judge overturned the verdict and he was ordered to be reinstated in December.

Government prosecutors are appealing so the case is still alive. Stonechild's family hopes that media attention will raise awareness of police brutality and of issues facing homeless people.

The video of the incident was released at the request of CTV Regina and The Regina Leader-Post.
