A photographer from Germany is putting together a project based on his experiences on the Fort Belknap Indian Community in Montana.

Felix von der Osten secured the tribal council's permission before embarking on his journey. He earned the trust of residents, who invited him to their homes, to everyday events and to ceremonies to learn more about life on the reservation.

"The most important thing was I sat down, listened and learned," von der Osten told CNN. "I opened my ears and let them talk so they could teach me."

The project remains ongoing although von der Osten has shared some of the photos from his visit last fall.
