Native reporter Kevin Abourezk provides an update on the Standing Bear and the Trail Ahead symposium being held next week in Nebraska:
Native author Sherman Alexie has canceled his appearance at next week’s 2015 Great Plains Symposium, “Standing Bear and the Trail Ahead.”

Organizers at the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs said Native activist and environmentalist Winona LaDuke will speak instead.

The symposium set for May 14-15 incorporates the commission’s Standing Bear Breakfast and will be informative for anyone concerned about the future wellbeing of Natives in the Great Plains.

Other presenters include national TV correspondent Hattie Kauffman, entrepreneur Lance Morgan, attorney Wilson Pipestem, public official Ponka-We Victors and Intertribal Buffalo Council president Jim Stone. Songwriter and folksinger Buffy Sainte-Marie will perform May 15 at Kimball Recital Hall.
