The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York will hold an election next month.

One chief and one sub-chief position, along with clerk, are up for grabs. But the election board hasn't been able to release a list of candidates due to "due to circumstances beyond their control," a press release stated.

The list was supposed to be released two weeks after the May 2 caucus. But a post on the tribe's official Facebook page said criminal background checks on all the candidates are taking "longer than anticipated."

Despite the holdup, voting will still take place June 1 and June 3. In-home voting for eligible tribal members will be held June 5.

A total of three chiefs and three sub-chiefs serve on the council. Terms run for three years. The clerk's term also runs for three years.

According to the tribe's website, the terms of Chief Paul O. Thompson and Sub-Chief Eric Thompson expire in June.
