Denise Juneau, a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation, is running for Congress.

Juneau announced her bid for the Democratic nomination for Montana's sole Congressional seat. If elected in 2016, she would be the first Native American woman to serve on Capitol Hill.

"I’ve spent my entire career fighting for Montana families and making sure that the next generation is prepared for the global workforce, that our public lands are protected, and that everyone has the opportunity to build a bright future," Juneau said on Facebook. "My Montana work ethic makes it possible to go from Head Start to Harvard, and from a small reservation town to Congress."

Juneau is currently serving her second term as the Superintendent of Public Instruction and is the first Native woman to hold statewide office in Montana. She grew up on the Blackfeet Nation in Montana.

Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Montana) currently holds the seat and has introduced pro-tribal bills. He is a first-term member of Congress.
