Tribal members see successes in Washington political races

The Native vote is paying off for tribal members across Washington state.

According to the Native American Caucus of the Washington State Democrats, tribal members won 10 races for city, county and school board positions.

The victors included Steven Oliver (Lummi), who was re-elected treasurer of Whatcom County. Debora Juarez (Blackfeet), Roxanne Murphy (Nooksack) and Teresa Taylor (Lummi) all won seats on the city councils in Seattle, Bellingham, and Ferndale, respectively.

Taylor narrowly defeated the incumbent for the Ferndale seat. She won by just 62 votes, according to the results.

For school boards, six tribal members won seats. They are: Scott Pinkham (Nez Perce), Sally Brownfield (Sqauxin Island), Tracey Rascon (Makah), Greg Colfax (Makah), Tyson Elliott Johnston (Quinault) and Ed Johnstone (Quinault).
