Gov. Steve Bullock visits Northern Cheyenne Reservation

LAME DEER, Mont –– “Giving Montana children every opportunity to succeed starts with them never having to worry about where their next meal comes from,” Montana Governor Steve Bullock recently said during a visit to Lame Deer, Montana, Northern Cheyenne Reservation on Friday, Nov. 16, 2015.

The visit was part of a state-wide tour to highlight the efforts of his administration, schools, nonprofits and other organizations to combat childhood hunger and ensure that kids have access to nutritional meals to succeed. He also visited Missoula, Billings, Browning, Helena and Livingston.

An estimated one in five children in Montana struggle with hunger and studies show that children who face food insecurity are more likely to have poor physical health, increased absenteeism from school and lower academic performance, a problem exacerbated in very low-income communities such as Northern Cheyenne where poverty rates are an estimated 60-80 percent. That is why Bullock and First Lady Bullock have made it a priority to combat hunger in the state, a recent press release from his office explained.
