The Native Sun News is undergoing some major changes that will put two Lakota women at the helm of the independent newspaper that focuses on tribal communities.

Tim Giago, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, has handed over the editor's post to Ernestine Chasing Hawk, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. The longtime journalist will start her duties on April 1.

But in an even bigger change, Giago is handing over publishing duties to Christy Giago Tibbitt, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. She's currently the paper's business manager.

"This is the biggest challenge of my life and since I have worked in this business for nearly 20 years I am confident that I will be able to lead the paper into the digital age. Native Sun News has continued to grow and we are now starting our seventh year in business. I am proud to have been a part of that growth,” Tibbitts said.

Both Chasing Hawk and Tibbits have worked with Giago over the decades as he established The Lakota Times, Indian Country Today and The Lakota Journal prior to the Native Sun News. He said he is confident in the next generation of leadership for the largest weekly paper in the state.

“I know that between Ernestine and Christy the paper will flourish and continue to be the best Native American newspaper in America," said Giago, who has spent more than 30 years in the news business.

“We have a great sales force that is out there knocking on doors and building our advertising base, and I have worked with Ernestine Chasing Hawk in the past with the Lakota Journal and as the new editor she and I will have to work closely together to ensure that we publish a newspaper that will continue to serve the Native Americans of the State of South Dakota and beyond.” added Tibbitts.
