Principal Chief Michell Hicks of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians won't be seeking a fourth term in office.

Hicks is rounding out his third, four-year term as the leader of the only federally recognized tribe in North Carolina. Five candidates have filed to take his place, according to the unofficial candidate list posted by The Cherokee One Feather.

Vice Chief Larry Blythe is running for re-election. He is facing three challengers.

The primary will be held June 4 to narrow down the field. Also up for grabs are 12 council seats.
