The House Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs will hold a hearing on the land-into-trust process on Thursday. In 1934, Congress passed the Indian Reorganization Act. The law put a halt to the allotment of tribal lands and authorized the Bureau of Indian Affairs to place land into trust for tribes and individual Indians in Section 5. But critics -- mainly state and local governments -- claim Section 5 is too vague because it does not lay out any standards for the land-into-trust process. The hearing will focus on those "inadequate standards." The hearing takes place at 2pm in the Room 1334 of the Longworth House Office Building. A witness list hasn't been posted online.
