Grande Ronde Tribes await decision on flying flag at high school

Leaders and members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde must wait another month for a decision on displaying the tribal flag at a public high school.

Angie Fasana, a tribal member whose husband teaches at Willamina High School, proposed the idea in March. School board members still don't have an answer but they have developed a flag policy -- apparently without consulting the tribe or the public.

"Display of flags other than the United States flag and Oregon flag will be limited to the flags of legally recognized sovereign nations located within district boundaries and will be displayed in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code," the new policy reads. "The district shall display a flag from a federally recognized sovereign nation located within district boundaries if the sovereign nation requests and provides an appropriately sized flag. The district will determine the location of the flag (gymnasium only) and what an appropriate size would be for the flag."

The school board is expected to decide on the tribal flag at its June 23 meeting.
