The Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico held an honoring ceremony for high school graduates on Tuesday.

Ten students received a $1,500 John Shendo, Jr. Memorial scholarship, The Ruidoso News reported. The scholarship is named for John Shendo Jr., who was the tribe's education director for more than 20 years prior to his passing in 2013.

Some 48 young tribal members who graduated from area high schools were honored at the ceremony, the News reported. All received laptops and the two students with the highest grade-point averages also received tablets.
