A man from Taos Pueblo in New Mexico was sentenced to seven years in federal prison for a stabbing incident on the reservation. Nathan Mondragon, 29, pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He admitted that he stabbed another man multiple times with a knife in September 2014. The victim suffered two stab wounds in his upper chest near his heart, as well as injuries to his face. He had to be airlifted to a hospital, where he was treated for a punctured lung. Mondragon was sentenced to 84 months. He was also ordered to three years of supervised release. The victim in the case asked for a lengthier sentence, federal prosecutors said in a court filing. They noted that Mondragon has been charged 14 times for violent crimes. Mondragon's attorney also acknowledged that the victim has been subject to ridicule on the reservation because the men had been in an intimate relationship prior to the incident.
