Oglala Lakota Nation Veteran’s horse races highlight 4th of July activities
Beteem top jockey with four wins, Brewer Jr. top owner with four wins

PINE RIDGE – On Saturday, the 4th of July, Three Moccasin Park was the site of the Oglala Lakota Nation Veteran’s horse races, 10 races from 220 yards to a half mile.

Jockey Brian Beteem won four of the 10 races -- the 220 yard, half mile men’s open, 660 yard open and the half mile Warrior Race. Owner Stan Brewer Jr. had his horses win the 220 yard race, the 660 yard open, the 220 yard youth race and the men’s 40 and over half mile.

Saturday’s racing opened with the 220 yard event, Beteem, riding Doc won it winning $225; Brewer Jr. was the owner. Sylvan Brown, on Wyatt Earp was second, Brewer Jr. was the owner with the runner-up taking home $135. Joe Robideaux on GMJ Cuss was 3rd, winning $90 with Tony Ghost Bear, the owner.

In the half mile men’s open, Beteem on Reds Dividends took it, GW Ecoffey is the owner; Joe Robideaux on Sambo was second, horse owned by Don Ghost Bear and Will Brewer on Funkman was third on a horse owned by Billy Jumping Eagle. Prize money for the first nine races was $225 for first, $135 for second and $90 for third.

Cheyenne Tallman won the 440 yard Women’s Saddle on Bebe, owned by Darrin Duchneaux; Shantel Robideaux was second riding Boo, owned by Tom Pourier while Alexis Ghost Bear on GMJ Cuss/owned by Tony Ghost Bear was third.

Riding Boner, Beteem took the 660 yard open, Brewer Jr. the owner, Clint White Hawk was second on Fed Ex, a Darrin Duchneaux horse while Tyler Grass on Hero/owned by Calvin Ghost Bear was third.

Beteem came right back to win the half mile Warrior Race riding R Splurger, owned by GW Ecoffey, Rico Cortez on X Factor/owned by Tom Pourier was second while Will Brewer on Hector/owned by Shorty Brewer was third.

Sylvan Brown on Wyatt Earp won the 220 yard Youth race, Tyler Grass on Stretch/owned by Tom Pourier was second and Will Brewer on Doc was third.

Shantel Roubideaux rode Boo to the Powder Puff 660 win, Tom Pourier is the owner; Alexis Ghost Bear rode Calvin Ghost Bear’s Hero to a runner-up finish and Cheyenne Tallman rode Soup Duchneaux’s Vaneasta to a 3rd place finish.

Stan Brewer Sr. rode his son’s Levi to a win in the Men’s 40 and over half mile; James Douchneaux rode Preacher/owned by Darrin Douchneaux to second place as Tally Standing Bear rode Alternate to third/owned by Earl Dubray.

In the Men’s 550 open, Hermis Tall rode Reds Dividend to a first, Trey Goings finished second on Houdini, a horse owned by Stan Brewer Jr. while Tyler Grass was third on Stretch.

Lakota Warpath took the $500 first place award in the Indian Relay race, Don Cubby Ghost Bear owner; D&D Express, owned by Soup Douchneaux was second, winning $300 while Blue Moon, owned by Mitch DuBray was third, taking home $90.
