President Barack Obama is visting the 49th state next week and Alaska Natives will be a big part of the historic three-day visit. Obama arrives in Anchorage, the state's largest city, on August 31. He will speak at the Conference on Global Leadership in the Arctic: Cooperation, Innovation, Engagement and Resilience and will be welcomed by the Alaska Federation of Natives and other organizations at the Rising Together event. The following day, Obama will visit Seward, The Alaska Dispatch News reported. The city was chosen so the president "will have the opportunity to view the effects of climate change firsthand," a White House spokesperson told the paper. The trip continues on September 2 with visits to Dillingham and Kotzebue, two Native communities. Kotzebue is in the Arctic, making Obama the first sitting president to visit the region. "We welcome the upcoming visit of President Obama and his senior leadership team," Alaska Federation of Natives President Julie Kitka said in a press release. "We are especially pleased that he will travel to rural parts of our state and see some of the immediate challenges facing the residents." Obama will conclude his trip on September 2. Get the Story:
