The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska held a primary election on Tuesday.

Nineteen people ran for eight open seats on the council. The top 16 candidates advanced to the general election on October 6.

“This is the first time in our history that eight of nine seats on tribal council will be open," said Chairwoman Darla LaPointe, whose position was not up for election. "After all we’ve been through in the last year, we manage to make a positive impact by working together. I’m proud of those who took the step to have their name on the ballot and I’m confident that those who are elected in the General Election will continue to make positive steps for our tribe."

Of the 16 final candidates, seven are incumbents. They are: Vincent Bass, Brian Chamberlain, Gloria Jean Eagle, Victoria Kitcheyan, James Snow, Kenneth Mallory and James Louis Larose.

The remaining candidates are: Isaac B. Smith, Marian Holstein, Curtis St. Cyr, Frank White, Amy Painter, Peter Snowball, Sr., Janet Bird, Kellie Snow, and Eli Painter. Smith had the most votes -- 235 -- out of all of the candidates.

The winners of the general will be sworn in on October 7.
