The Morongo Band of Mission Indians has joined the Western Riverside Council of Governments.

The tribe is a voting member of the council, which addresses transportation and environmental issues in western part of Riverside County. The tribe participated in its first meeting on Monday, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.

"Like our neighbors, our tribe is a part of the fabric of Riverside County, and we all share a commitment to seeing our region succeed," Chairman Robert Martin told the paper.

The council will reach out to the five other tribes in the region, the paper said. In addition to the tribe, 17 cities belong to the group.
