Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio), the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, vowed to prevent a shutdown of the federal government.

In an appearance on Face the Nation on Sunday, Boehner criticized extremist Republicans as "false prophets." He said their pursuit of a shutdown was "unrealistic" and said he would work to prevent one before the start of the new fiscal year on October 1.

The continuing resolution would keep the government going through December 11. The Senate is taking up the measure today, according to the Democratic schedule. It must pass the House by Wednesday night to avert a shutdown.

Boehner, who surprised Capitol Hill with his resignation announcement on Friday, is leaving Congress on October 31.
