The Blackfeet Nation is asking Pondera County in Montana to open a voting office on the reservation.

Tribal leaders want the office to be located in Heart Butte, The Great Falls Tribune reported. That would save residents from making a two-hour round trip to exercise their voting rights in the county seat in Conrad.

The settlement in Wandering Medicine v. McCulloch required three counties establish satellite offices on three reservations. Pondera wasn't a part of the case but Blackfeet leaders believe they are entitled to similar protections.

Native Americans represent 14.5 percent of the population in the county, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
