Brown University in Rhode Island will celebrate Indigenous People’s Day for the first time this year. The Ivy League institution used to observe Columbus Day on the second Monday of October but changed the name to Fall Weekend in 2009. Native Americans at Brown, a student group, persuaded faculty to make one more change. "In discussions prior to the vote, faculty expressed their support for the name change as an opportunity to show support for Native Americans on our campus and beyond, and to celebrate Native American culture and history," professor Thomas Roberts, who chairs the faculty executive committee, said in a statement. A growing number of tribes, municipalities and even states are observing Indigenous Peoples' Day or Native American Day. Get the Story:
