A judge in Washington state is asserting jurisdiction over an allotment owned by an Indian family.

Judge Kevin Hull in Kitsap County banned the owners of the allotment from operating a fireworks stand at the 0.79-acre site unless they comply with state and local laws, The Kitsap Sun reported. Even though the family does not plan on selling fireworks this summer, a representative disputed the ruling.

"We don't believe they have the jurisdiction to rule on anything," Kevin Chambers told the paper. "Local governments here never have had any say over federal land."

The land was placed in trust in the 1920s so it is not subject to local jurisdiction. It's located at 1321 North Callow Avenue in Bremerton.

The family, some of whom belong to the Samish Nation, has been interested in using the allotment for a casino. The property falls with the traditional territory of the Suquamish Tribe.
