Umatilla Tribes play significant role in Oregon county's economy

The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation in Oregon are a major player in the local economy.

Economic consultant Robert Whelan told the Pendleton Chamber of Commerce that the tribe is directly or indirectly responsible for 11 percent of the jobs in Umatilla County, The East Oregonian reported. The tribe and its enterprises employ 1,582 people, the paper said.

The tribe's businesses include Cayuse Technologies, an information technology firm, and the Wildhorse Casino Resort.
