The inaugural First Nations Provincial Spelling Bee takes place April 8 on the Poundmaker Cree Nation in Saskatchewan.

About 140 Native students from schools across the province have registered for the event, The Battlefords News-Optimist reported. The top three spellers will advance to the Spelling Bee of Canada in Ontario on May 15.

"This is a first ever for Native people," organizer Pauline Favel told the paper.
