Race Matters: Professor Heather Shotton talks Native identity

Race Matters: Dr. Heather Shotton on Native identity

Heather Shotton, a Native American studies professor at the University of Oklahoma and a member of the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes discusses Native identity issues on the Race Matters program.

Shotton strongly identifies with her tribal ancestry and said young Native Americans need to see their people and their histories reflected in their school studies. She believes making the connection is vital for improving student achievement levels.

"The issue of invisibility really, I think, does a lot of damage to our students because they don’t see themselves reflected in what they’re learning," Shotton said on the program.

Race Matters is an ongoing series on KGOU radio in Oklahoma.
