Student from Navajo Nation to attend State of the Union address

Carielle Bahe, a member of the Navajo Nation, will attend the State of the Union as a guest of Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-New Mexico).

Bahe is a junior at the University of New Mexico. She is pursuing her degree in Secondary Education and plans to become a teacher in her community on her reservation.

"It’s a very exciting opportunity for me," Bahe, 21, told The Farmington Daily-Times of her trip to Washington, D.C.

President Barack Obama is delivering his final State of the Union at 9pm Eastern tonight. Heinrich hopes Bahe's presence at the speech emphasized the importance of education.

"I am honored to have Carielle Bahe as my guest for the State of the Union and look forward to sharing this experience with her," Heinrich said in a press release. "Carielle's commitment to her education, giving back to her community, and working with youth is inspiring, and represents the kind of bright future we can have in New Mexico if we invest in our students,
