Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump ridiculed the Indian heritage claims of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) after she slammed the real estate mogul on Twitter.

Warren, a first-term member of the Senate, called Trump a "loser" and a "serious threat" due to his comments about women and ethnic minorities. He responded by bringing up an issue that dogged her during her 2012 campaign.

“Who is that, the Indian? You mean the Indian?” Trump said in Washington, D.C., on Monday, ABC News reported. He made similar comments about Warren in an interview with Maureen Dowd for The New York Times on Sunday.

Warren has claimed Cherokee ancestry for decades but has resisted repeated calls to provide documentation. She was born and raised in Oklahoma and said she grew up hearing about her alleged heritage.

"Everyone on our mother’s side — aunts, uncles, and grandparents — talked openly about their Native American ancestry,” Warren wrote in A Fighting Chance, according to Politico. “My brothers and I grew up on stories about our grandfather building one-room schoolhouses and about our grandparents’ courtship and their early lives together in Indian Territory.”
