Youth from the Hannahville Indian Community in Michigan are connecting with agriculture as part of a new venture. The Youth Center started an aquaponics program last fall, The Escanaba Daily Press reported. Through a unique system of water pumps and fish tanks, tribal members and are growing and selling vegetables like lettuce, Swiss chard and microgreens, the paper said. Other foods like cucumbers and tomatoes are being cultivated through conventional methods. "It's a cultural thing, too - bringing farming back and getting in touch with the land," Youth Services Director Rod Lovell, who hopes to expand the program in the coming months, told the paper.
