BROOKINGS –– The South Dakota Newspaper Association is in the process of conducting oral and visual interviews with several longtime newspaper editors and publishers with long records of covering news and events in South Dakota.

On Saturday, Feb. 27, the student journalists under the direction of Dr. Teri Finneman conducted a two-hour interview with Lakota journalist, editor and publisher Tim Giago. The video of the interview will be placed in the archives of the SDNA.

The student journalists questioned Giago about his many years of covering issues in South Dakota especially about how his newspapers impacted news reporting in general with the rest of South Dakota’s newspapers.

During the interview Giago talked about racism, using Native Americans as mascots, some of the hardest news stories his newspapers had to cover over the years, some of his best moments in the news business, editors or reporters he used as role models and what he perceived to be his greatest achievements in the field of journalism and news reporting.

The group will be conducting a similar interview with Richard Lee, former Professor of Journalism at South Dakota State University next week.
