The Northern Arapaho Tribe of Wyoming has entered a new era of self-determination.

The tribe took over operations of the Arapahoe Health Center from the Indian Health Service in January. The goal is to provide better care for the community, administrator Vonda Wells told Wyoming Public Media.

But Wells said the self-determination contract hasn't been fully funded by the IHS. Tribes have been fighting for contract support costs for decades and it's been the subject of numerous court cases.

"It was exciting because we got there, we got the contract," Wells told Wyoming Public Media. "But it was also, I think, for everybody kind of like, you know, okay, we’re here, we got it. But we need money.”

Wells said the tribe will look for other sources of funding to supplement the existing contract.
