Hillary Clinton envisions women making up half of Cabinet posts

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is planning to select a more representative and more diverse Cabinet if she wins election in November, The New York Times reports.

Clinton wants women to make up half of her Cabinet, the paper said. Historically, only about a quarter to a third of the top-level positions have been held by women, according to the paper.

The first woman to head the Department of the Interior, which includes the Bureau of Indian Affairs, came on board in 2001. Likewise, the first women leaders of the Department of State, the Department of Justice and the Department of Agriculture have only risen to power within last couple of decades.

After winning election in Canada last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed women to half of his Cabinet posts. "Because it's 2015," he was widely quoted as saying at the time.

Clinton is poised to claim her party's nomination for president at the Democratic National Convention later this month.
