The Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians is investigating the shooting of a moose on its reservation in Wisconsin.

According to a statement on the tribe's Facebook page, a tribal member killed the animal early Wednesday morning. The circumstances of the shooting were not disclosed.

"Due to the rarity of moose in this area, the tribe does not condone hunting of moose," the statement read.

Moose are indeed rare in the entire state. According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, some animals occasionally wander from Minnesota or Michigan's Upper Peninsula, an area near the Lac du Flambeau Reservation. Their numbers appear to be increasing, according to the department.

The tribe's post on the incident is seeing a lot of activity.
