The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians announced the completion of the first housing units at a tribal village in Hartford, Michigan.

Work began on the Pokégnek Édawat Hartford last August. The first round of housing includes eight town homes and duplexes.

"“We have 39 families on the waiting list for homes in Hartford, so the demand is high," Chairman John P. Warren said in a press release. "We look forward to completing the additional phases to serve our families in need.”

Eventually, the village will grow to include more homes, a community center and a park. Half of the housing units will be set aside for elders.

Hartford is one of the four main areas in which the tribe is re-establishing its homeland under the provisions of the Pokagon Restoration Act of 1994. The law restored the tribe to federal recognition.

The other areas are Dowagiac and New Buffalo in Michigan and South Bend in Indiana.
