The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma is gearing up for a council election.

Chief Joe Bunch, who previously served as assistant chief, is among those seeking to lead the tribe. He was elevated to the top post in May following the impeachment of George Wickliffe.

But Wickliffe is seeking to get his seat back, according to an unofficial list of candidates that the tribe posted on Facebook. A tribal judge said he remains eligible to run for office despite his impeachment.

The filing period for candidates closed August 12. In addition to chief, the tribe will be electing an assistant chief, secretary, treasurer and nine council representatives.

The election takes place November 7.
