The Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak in Alaska will start a language immersion program, KTOO reports.

The five-year grant from the Administration for Native Americans will be used to start an Alutiiq language nest for pre-schoolers. The tribe also plans to promote language use among older students, according to a project description.

"Our community has been working on language revitalization since the 1960s, and this grant is a huge honor and a huge responsibility for the Sun’aq Tribe, and I really look forward to doing our best and moving forward with the language revitalization movement," Candace Branson, the tribe’s Alutiiq heritage educator, told KTOO.

ANA also awarded language grants to tribes in Massachusetts, California, Oklahoma and other states.
