The Jackson Rancheria Band of Miwuk Indians recently launched a newspaper to serve the local community in California.

The Acorn News is being published Tuesdays and Fridays. It will focus on local news, history, entertainment and sports as well as offer national headlines from The Associated Press.

"It is our hope that The Acorn News will be a valued gift to our community," Chairman Adam Dalton said in a press release. "The Acorn News will be staffed by talented journalists who have decades of experience and are deeply committed to journalistic independence."

The new business is already growing thanks to the acquisition of The Amador Ledger-Dispatch, a weekly paper. The tribe will be folding the operations of The Ledger-Dispatch into The Acorn News.

Prior to the purchase, most of the Ledger-Dispatch staff had already left to join the tribe's operation, The Sacramento Bee reported. The tribe paid $1 million for the Ledger-Dispatch's subscriber base and other assets of the paper, The Bee reported.

The first issue of the united Acorn News will be distributed this Friday, the tribe said in the press release.
