The Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians is being sued for failing to pay nearly $750,000 in rent for its headquarters, The Fresno Bee reports. During a leadership dispute within the tribe, one faction started using an office in Fresno, California, as its headquarters. But rent was never paid for more than two years, according to a lawsuit. The dispute has been resolved with the election of a new council. Chairwoman Claudia Gonzales blamed the unpaid rent on the old faction. “This issue, like many others, is part of the legacy of the previous tribal council that was responsible for the casino closure,” Gonzales told The Bee. “Since I was elected chairwoman with a new tribal council, we have been working hard to clean up their messes and restore transparency, economic vitality and respect for our tribe.” The lease agreement contained a limited waiver of sovereign immunity, allowing for the tribe to be sued, the paper reported.
