Conn. lawmakers press BIA on recognition decision
Friday, February 20, 2004

All seven members of Connecticut's Congressional delegation say the Bureau of Indian Affairs might be trying to limit appeals of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation's recognition.

The lawmakers cite a letter from R. Lee Fleming, director of the BIA's Office of Federal Acknowledgement. In it, he said he wanted to limit the appeal period to 30 days.

BIA regulations call for a 90-day period but the tribe's recognition is being handled under a different timeline that was agreed to by the state of Connecticut in federal court. State attorney general Richard Blumenthal is going to fight the BIA's decision to acknowledge the tribe.
