Seminole Tribe pledges to reign in lavish spending
Wednesday, February 25, 2004

Leaders of the Seminole Tribe of Florida say they will reign in lavish spending and stop using certain casino machines.

The National Indian Gaming Commission has threatened to shut down the tribe's casinos unless the tribe complies. Tribal leaders are given $5-million to $10-million to spend as they wish. The tribe's spending habits were the center of a fraud trial of three non-Indians who were eventually acquitted.

The NIGC also wants the tribe to stop using electronic casino machines that are considered Class III. The state refuses to negotiate a Class III compact with the tribe and the Bush administration has delayed issuing regulations under federal law that would help the tribe.
