Peltier locks up Peace and Freedom nomination
Wednesday, March 3, 2004
Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts may have swept Super Tuesday but American Indian Movement activist Leonard Peltier won the California Peace & Freedom Party nomination in California yesterday.
With 91.4 percent of the precincts reporting, Peltier won 58.3 percent of the Peace & Freedom vote. He defeated rival Walter F. Brown, a lawyer from Oregon who had 41.7 percent of the party's vote.
According to the California Secretary of State, Peltier's support was strong statewide.
But in Alpine County, which has a 15 percent Native population above the age of 18, the highest in the state, he got no votes. To view results, visit the Secretary of State website

The California Peace & Freedom Party platform states that the party
will "Honor treaties with Native American nations, recognize California's Native American nations [and] Defend and extend Native American rights and sovereignty."
