Former Southern Ute chairman dies of heart attack

Leonard C. Burch, former chairman of the Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado, died this morning after suffering a heart attack.

Burch, 69, had been admitted to the intensive-care unit at Mercy Medical Center in Durango last night. At the time, he was said to be in critical condition. He died early this morning, the Associated Press reports.

Burch led the tribe for three decades. In that time, the tribe grew to be a huge player in energy development.

Burch retired from public service last December.
