Tribes protest study of ancient human remains
Monday, July 28, 2003

Several tribes are opposing study of human remains dating back thousands of years, The Houston Chronicle reports.

The remains were uncovered while the Army Corps of Engineers was doing work to expand a canal in the Texas Gulf Coast. Initial tests of the bones and other artifacts show they could be anywhere from 600 to 11,000 years old.

Several tribes, including the Alabama-Coushatta, Choctaw, Comanche, and Caddo, asked the Corps to stop work. They are considering filing a lawsuit, said an Alabama-Coushatta tribal member.

The land being excavated is owned by DuPont Textiles and Interiors Corp.
