West Nile virus on Navajo Nation's doorstep
Friday, August 8, 2003

The Navajo Nation faces a moderate to high risk of seeing the West Nile virus on the reservation, The Gallup Independent reports.

The tribe is starting a horse vaccination program in hopes of preventing an outbreak. Over the next month, some 5,000 horses will be treated.

The West Nile virus causes death in one of three horses infected. It is typically passed through mosquitoes.

Cases have been reported in New Mexico and Colorado in areas near the Navajo Nation.
