Native rights leader has double-lung transplant
Monday, August 11, 2003

Donald Marshall, a Mi'kmaq tribal member who has been at the center of two major legal battles, underwent a double-lung transplant operation, CBC News reports.

Marshall spent 11 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit. He was freed in 1983.

In the late 1990s, he was charged by the federal government with fishing out of season and without a license. His battle led to a Supreme Court decision affirming the fishing rights of all Mi'kmaqs.
