Dangerous Indian horse race draws criticism
Monday, August 11, 2003

At least one man has been hospitalized and one horse put to death as a result of a dangerous horse race in Washington.

The Suicide Race is the most popular attraction at the town of Omak's annual rodeo. Most of the participants are members of the Confederated Colville Tribes, who consider the event an honored tradition in the Indian racing circuit.

The national Humane Society sees otherwise. The group says the race is cruel to the horses. Since 1983, at least 15 horses have died as a result of the race.
