Cherokee Freedmen sue BIA over disenfranchisement
Tuesday, August 12, 2003
The Cherokee Freedmen of Oklahoma filed a lawsuit on Monday against the Department of Interior, challenging federal approval of their disenfranchisement.
The Freedmen, descendants of African slaves who were made members of the tribe in a post Civil War treaty, were not allowed to vote in the Cherokee Nation's May 25 election.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs first said it would not accept the election because the Freedmen were excluded but later changed its mind.
